Casamigos Tequila Review

Contents

Casamigos is a Hollywood favorite because of its co-founder George Clooney, but it has a lot of substance to go with its style. Casamigos is from the Jalisco highlands from 100% agave. It is also one of the smoothest, most natural-tasting tequilas ever. Clooney and co-founder Rande Gerber said they set out to create “the best-tasting, smoothest tequila that didn’t need salt or lime.”

Nothing beats a “Casamigos and soda” for a refreshing, 10 out of 10 drink, whether you’re at an A-list after party or just chilling at home. Each batch, for at least two months, is in stainless steel barrels, yielding a pleasant blend of sweet agave, mild citrus, and a hint of vanilla.

The billion-dollar incident

The duo tasted 700 different recipes throughout their nearly two-year search. Despite the fact that they had no intention of launching a brand — “Casamigos truly started by accident as far as a corporation,” Gerber later said — the tequila was a success with all of their pals. Clooney and Gerber’s producer soon had them ordering over 1,000 bottles every year. At this point, they both know that they need a license in order to continue purchasing bottles.

Clooney and Gerber took the plunge and launched the business commercially in 2013 with the support of their property development acquaintance Mike Meldman. Four years later, Diageo paid $1 billion for Casamigos ($700 million upfront and $300 million eventually, depending on sales success). Clooney and Gerber continue to play active roles in the organization.

Taking things slow

Casamigos tequila comes in three varieties: blanco, reposado, and aejo. Each is prepared with 100 percent Blue Weber agave, which is gathered when it is between seven and nine years old. The agave piñasare then roasted for 72 hours in brick ovens before fermenting for 80 hours (more than double the industry average). The tequila is then aged in casks for two months for Blanco, seven months for a reposado, and 14 months for añejo before bottling.

They are more than just Tequila

Casamigos added a joven mezcal to its inventory in 2018. Aside from being Casamigos’ only non-tequila offering, the mezcal is the only release that isn’t in clear glass. Gerber created the matte-black design, and each bottle is polished with a special rubbing technique to make it one-of-a-kind.

What makes it great?

Casamigos was founded by George Clooney and Rande Gerber out of their enjoyment of sharing tequila at their adjoining houses in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Clooney is no longer with the firm. What began as a Blanco has expanded into a line that includes reposado and this añejo, which is matured for 14 months in American oak barrels.

You’ll love it too!

With co-founder George Clooney’s seal of approval, it’s difficult to go wrong with a bottle of Casamigos tequila. Casamigos is a mellow tequila from Mexico’s Jalisco region. It is ideal for drinking straight or blending into cocktails and margaritas. Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman launched it as the result of their ambition to produce the best tequila. And it lives up to their claims rather well, with a crisp flavor that’s a treat to drink. The company makes three tequilas: Blanco, reposado, and añejo, all of which are from 100% blue Weber agave.

What’s the hype about?

Rande Gerber launched Casamigos — roughly translated as “home of friends” — in 2013 in collaboration with actor George Clooney. Casamigos Reposado is everything you’d expect from a well-aged Tequila. It’s entirely from Weber Blue Agave in the red clay soils of the Jalisco highlands. The piñas are slow-roasted in traditional brick ovens for three days before being crushed. Importantly, the agave juice is fermented for eighty hours with a specific blend of yeast strains… and, yes, this is a well-guarded secret. It’s matured for seven months in “reconditioned” ex-Bourbon casks before being bottled at 40% ABV.

You must try this!

Casamigos Reposado Tequila is from blue agave plants from the Jalisco Highlands, Mexico’s tequila heartland. Each agave is hand-picked for flavor before being slow-cooked. This Casamigos Tequila variation is in white oak barrels for seven months, giving it a cocoa woody flavor that makes it ideal for sipping or drinking plain.

The perfume of vanilla, maple, spices, and peanut shells pervades the Casamigos Reposado, with the traditional tequila heat mitigated by sweet tropical fruit and wood. Oh, and having Hollywood A-lister George Clooney as the initial owner and chief pitchman also helps.

About their tequilas…

Casamigos Blanco Tequila is crisp and clean, with mild hints of citrus, vanilla, sweet agave, and a smooth finish. Casamigos Reposado Tequila is a gentle, slightly oaky tequila with undertones of caramel and cocoa. It has a silky texture and a medium to a long smooth finish. Casamigos Añejo Tequila has a delightfully pure and refined complex bouquet with gentle caramel and vanilla notes after 14 months of aging. Casamigos Mezcal, from Oaxaca, Mexico using 100 percent Espadn Agave, kick off in 2018.

After resting for up to two months, the mezcal is perfect and delicate, with scents of tamarind and pomegranate plus the herbal tones of fresh mint and dried oregano. Delicate smoke and black pepper flavors lead to a lengthy, velvety finish. Best served on the rocks, without salt or lime.

Now, to wrap it up…

Celebrity tequilas is a long list even before George Clooney’s Casamigos, but the success of this brand and the exorbitant price for Casamigos imply that no discussion about A-lister agave is complete without it. This Blanco tequila’s flavor profile has strong artificial vanilla overtones rather than earthy agave. Making it an approachable choice for people new to the genre. While it is not for purists, it is nonetheless popular for reasons other than the Clooney factory.

Why not create some tequila with your friends? That appears to be the reasoning behind Rande Gerber, George Clooney, and Michael Meldman’s collaboration in launching Casamigos in 2013. All of their limited-batch, ultra-premium tequilas are handmade. All from the hand-selected 100 percent, Blue Weber Agave farmed for at least seven years in Mexico’s Jalisco Highlands.
